Moorefield Varsity Yellow Jackets defeated Tucker County 17-0 on Thursday thanks in part to 17 runs in the first inning. Trevor Baldwin drew a walk, scoring one run, Matthew Iman drew a walk, scoring one run, Thomas Simmons drew a walk, scoring one run, Caleb Flinn singled, scoring two runs, Kail Greenwalt singled, scoring two runs, Oliver Crites drew a walk, scoring one run, Trevor Baldwin drew a walk, scoring one run, Matthew Iman was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Thomas Simmons singled, scoring one run, Blake Snyder was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Caleb Flinn singled, scoring one run, Kail Greenwalt drew a walk, scoring one run, Zakk Keplinger grounded out, scoring one run, Oliver Crites drew a walk, scoring one run, and Trevor Baldwin singled, scoring one run.
Moorefield baserunner Zakk Keplinger had one close scrape sliding into home plate on a wild pitch as the Tucker County pitcher practically tackled him rolling over on top a moment too late.
Cyrus Kump led things off on the bump for Moorefield Varsity Yellow Jackets. The pitcher surrendered one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out six and walking one.
“We had a good week and played good competition to get us ready to be successful. Our defense has been good all week and our pitching has been good all week. We have a lot of things to be grateful for and it is a good feeling. It was good to see us have a lot of good at-bats and for our guys building more confidence. They are knowing about game situations and when they need to move on the bases. Cyrus [Kump] had great concentration all night for us,” Moorefield coach Wade Armentrout commented.
Owen Helmick stepped on the mound first for Tucker County. The pitcher gave up seven hits and 16 runs over one-third of an inning, striking out one and walking seven.
Moorefield Varsity Yellow Jackets’s Caleb Flinn, the number eight hitter, led Moorefield Varsity Yellow Jackets with two hits in two at bats. Moorefield Varsity Yellow Jackets had a strong eye at the plate, collecting 13 walks for the game. Trevor Baldwin, Oliver Crites, and Edison Metheny led the team with two bases on balls each. Moorefield Varsity Yellow Jackets stole four bases in the game. Moorefield Varsity Yellow Jackets didn’t commit a single error in the field. Oliver Crites had the most chances in the field with four.
“I love that we are really growing as a team and our chemistry is really good. We are starting to put everything together. If we can get our bats going, then we will be good. My biggest goal is to win a bunch of games, obviously and that’s a given. We just need to get our bats going more. We are winning right now and starting off pretty good, but not as good as we can be. We need to keep improving as we move forward and get out of our slumps. [Faith] It really carries us and gives us something to count on. God is always there for us and we rely on Him,” Moorefield senior Oliver Crites remarked.
One special game day routine for Crites is getting a meat stick from Sheetz before every game which might be giving him the extra boost for those epic leaps as a catcher.
Owen Boylard led Tucker County with one hit in two at bats. Tucker County didn’t commit a single error in the field. Evan Witt had the most chances in the field with four.
Moorefield Varsity Yellow Jackets will travel to Strasburg Varsity Rams for their next game on Monday.
