Hardy County Board of Education . . .

“We thank you for your many blessings. Be with all of our students this summer. Keep them safe and provide for them, Lord,” prayed Hardy County Schools Superintendent during the customary invocation.

First Emily Morris, principal of East Hardy Elementary School, shared her appreciation for the support of Burke and Herbert Bank. She stated that they “have been involved with our school for quite a while now, so I’m very excited to formally recognize them as a school business partner.

They support us.”

One area of support comes from “supporting our students of the month and our leader of the month each month.” Burke and Herbert sends representatives on those occasions. Morris stated that “they come, and they present gift cards and certificates and make sure the students know that the representatives from Berk and Herbert in our community really recognize our student leaders and believe that leadership is important.”

Superintendent Van Meter noted that “we couldn’t survive really without our business partnerships for lots of different reasons.”

Next the Board and Superintendent recognized the service of Doug Hines, including 26 years as a principal for Hardy County Schools. Superintendent Van Meter stated that “he’s been a blessing to many of us, And he served on the board for many years too . . . And I think we can all here agree that we’ll be greatly missing you.”

Later in the meeting, individual Board members shared some of their memories of his service and their appreciation for his impact over the decades

He replied “so I’ll miss you all.”

Josh See provided the maintenance and facilities report. He shared that they closed 71 work orders in 30 days, but had only achieved 88 percent reaction. Part of that came from roof leaks that appeared during the recent intense storms that hit the region.

Recent work included repairs to the HVAC at East Hardy High School. A sanitation inspection was also conducted by the Hardy County Health Department. See also noted that plans for elevator repair had to be scaled back due to going over the School Building Administration’s funding award.

HVAC work also commenced at Moorefield Elementary School. The Town of Moorefield Police Department increased patrols near the site briefly to protect the valuable equipment placed there prior to work starting on the project.

He also reported that 80 percent of the East Hardy solar project has been installed with the system “ready for commissioning by June 8.” Solar project work also continues at Moorefield Elementary and Moorefield Middle.

Board members also heard of features on the new buses that just arrived, including LED lighting and better cameras

Towards the end of the meeting, the Superintendent and Board shared thanks to those leaving the service of Hardy County Schools. Orrin Staggers has served as counsel. He will continue to do so on a contractual, but not an employment, basis.

Appreciation was also shared for the system’s retirees as well, notably Nancy Klein.
