The Moorefield Town Council had a very short meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 4, and Mayor Scott Fawley began it with remembrance.
“This evening marks the fortieth anniversary of the Flood of ’85. There were 47 lives lost, five out of our local community.”
Fawley also mentioned more than 10,000 homes and 700 businesses damaged or lost. He encouraged attendees to visit the Town’s Facebook page for a memorial post.
The meeting was, overall, brief — one of the shortest meetings in more than a year.
The Council approved Tom Widder’s request to subdivide the lot he owns near the courthouse, allowing the back part of his property, which is often used by another property owner’s tenants, to be sold to that property owner.
Public Works director Lucas Gagnon said, “everything’s looking good” at the tennis courts, which are still on track to be paved this year, and will hopefully be ready for use in the spring, when the Moorefield High School tennis teams play.
The Council decided to move forward with a 150-foot pavilion. Downsizing the pavilion by half did not significantly decrease the overall project cost.
They also agreed to move fully forward with the RecDesk contract for the Town Park, which will enable citizens to book and pay for shelters and facilities online.
The next two meetings are scheduled for Nov. 18 and Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall. The public is encouraged to attend.
