Lately we have been inspired by philanthropy in all its forms, ranging from volunteering and serving on boards to donating canned goods or giving a few dollars to a school fundraiser. Our community is full of people who care about lifting others and improving the quality of life for everyone who lives in this wonderful place we call home.
At the heart of this generous community is the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF), now in its 30th year. The EWVCF gathers impassioned donors to grow an everlasting endowment that grants scholarships and support to nonprofits serving those living in Berkeley, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties.
You may be wondering “what is a community foundation?” A community foundation is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that works with a variety of donors, often called philanthropists, to create endowed funds supporting local charitable interests that benefit residents of a defined geographic area, such as our five-county region.
Community foundations are designed to make charitable giving straightforward and impactful for donors by providing expert guidance, streamlined processes, and a high level of flexibility.
Do not let the word “philanthropist” scare you. It is a big word that often conjures up images of the ultra-wealthy making big donations to charities. But the definition is much broader than that. Merriam-Webster defines “philanthropist” as “one who makes an active effort to promote human welfare.” Everyone can be involved in philanthropy. Whether you give your time, talent, or financial support, the fact that you care about others is what matters.
When individuals, families, and companies begin working with us, one of the most common pleasant surprises is just how easy it is to support an existing fund, or to establish a fund in honor or memory of a loved one. Many people decide to establish a fund at the community foundation after several years of informal giving.
The EWVCF recently welcomed several new funds to the endowment. The Horses with Hearts Endowment is an agency fund that will provide annual distributions to support and offset costs as they work toward year-round programming. The Charles “Sam” and Bernadine Davis Miller Endowment is a designated fund providing annual distributions to the Camp Frame 4-H Association and youth programs at Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation.
Whatever causes and charities you support, the EWVCF is here to assist you in reaching your personal giving objectives and goals. Whether you are considering a new gift, planning a legacy, or simply seeking advice on maximizing the impact of your philanthropy, the EWVFC provides ongoing support and local expertise. We simplify the legwork so you can focus on the joy and meaning of giving and the positive difference you are making in the lives of others.
