Betty Jean Moten, a beloved member of the Scherr, WV community, passed away peacefully at her residence while under the care of Mountain Hospice on Monday, June 29, 2026. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose light and love will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Born in Detroit, MI on June 4, 1930, to the late George Dennis Powell and Bessie Jane (Wiltison) Powell, she also was preceded in death by her first husband Roscoe Heavener, sons Rocky and Larry Heavener, and a daughter Judy Heavener.
Her memory will be carried on by her husband of 23 years, Lewis E. Moten, her daughter Donna Michael of Maysville, WV, her grandchildren, Darlene Yokum and Deanna Evans, her great-grandchildren, Garrett, Nathan and Angela Willis, Deprise Hawk and Desiree Evans, her stepchildren, Lewis Moten, III of Front Royal, VA, Lucas Moten of Baltimore, MD, Bonnie Tortorice of Minnesota, and Rebekah Cadwallader of Gilmore, MD, as well as numerous step-grandchildren.
A resident of Scherr, WV for over 70 years, Betty was a well-known and loved figure in her community. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a devout Jehovah’s Witness, attending the Moorefield, WV Kingdom Hall. In her earlier years, she worked at the Keyser Garment Factory, leaving a lasting impression on her colleagues with her industriousness and positive spirit.
Betty’s favorite pastimes were sewing and needlework, hobbies that showcased her patience, creativity, and attention to detail. The fruits of her labor, much like her presence, added comfort and beauty to the lives of those around her.
Services will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Moorefield, WV, on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
