Betty M. Funkhouser Slater, age 92, of Wardensville, WV, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2026.
The youngest of six siblings, Betty was born in Baker, WV, on June 14, 1934, to Blanche and Herbert Funkhouser. In 1955, she married the love of her life, Boyd “Doc” Slater. Doc’s 21-year career in the U.S. Army allowed them to live in multiple states across the country and Germany before they ultimately returned to West Virginia.
After raising her three daughters, Betty poured her heart into her community. She served as an EMT for Mathias-Baker Volunteer Rescue Squad and was an active member of the VFW Capon Post Auxiliary. Guided by her faith, she was deeply devoted to Baker Run Christian Church and regularly visited nursing home residents to offer companionship. She loved nature and traveling, and some of her fondest memories included trips out West and camping with her family. Betty and Doc also shared a love of boating, spending a week each summer at Smith Mountain Lake with their children and grandchildren.
Adored by her family, Betty was known for her generosity, strong-willed spirit, and quick sense of humor. She remained a central, unifying figure of the Funkhouser family throughout her life.
She is survived by her three children, Charlotte (John) Bowman, Kathy (Mike) McDaniel, and Carmen (Michael) Sager; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Aaron) Sundstrom and Heather (Frank) Polinik; and her six great-grandchildren, Elaina, Graham, Cora, Tenley, Ada, and Connor.
A Celebration of Life will be held at McKee Funeral Home on August 2, 2026. Visitation will be held from 12:00 – 2:00 PM, with a service at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Betty’s memory be made to Potomac Highlands Wounded Warrior Outreach, P.O. Box 1225, Buckhannon, WV 26201.
All arrangements are by McKee Funeral Home, Baker, WV.
