Every August, familiar signs of a new school year appear throughout our communities.
Store shelves fill with notebooks, pencils, and backpacks. Families prepare schedules and organize routines. Teachers put the finishing touches on their classrooms, eager to welcome students through their doors.
At the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation, we see this season as more than the beginning of another academic year. We see it as an opportunity for all of us to invest in the promise of our communities.
Individuals, businesses, churches, and civic organizations are already collecting school supplies and helping local families prepare for the year ahead. Whether you are purchasing items for your own children or contributing to a community drive, your generosity sends an important message to every student: your community cares about your success.
We extend a warm welcome to the many new teachers, administrators, bus drivers, counselors, cooks, custodians, nurses, and support staff members joining our schools this year. Thank you for choosing a profession devoted to serving children and families.
The impact of your work reaches far beyond the classroom and will help shape the future of our region for years to come.
Many of our donors have recognized the extraordinary creativity and dedication of local educators, and through their generosity offer opportunities for public school educators to apply for classroom mini-grants or youth and education grants that support innovative and engaging learning experiences. Some of the most meaningful educational moments occur when curiosity is encouraged, creativity is celebrated, and students are inspired to explore new ideas.
The beginning of the school year also calls on each of us to share the responsibility of protecting our children. School buses will once again be traveling along roads throughout Berkeley, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, and Morgan counties. Please slow down, remain alert, and exercise patience when approaching bus stops, school zones, and crosswalks. Let us also keep a watchful eye on the students who walk to and from school each day.
A successful school year requires the support of an entire community. By encouraging our students, supporting our educators, and protecting our children, we create an environment where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. Together, we can ensure that the new school year begins with optimism, kindness, and a shared commitment to the next generation.
