Sherry Taylor started her 39-year career working for the company on July 9, 1986, which was then named Rockingham Poultry Cooperative. She started working for the company on night shift in the Packing Bins department. She stayed on night shift for five years before transferring to day shift and worked in the KFC department until the department went to Dapec machines. She then started working in the Fillet Sizing department in Breast Debone and is currently working there.
I asked Sherry how much has changed since she started working for the company, and she said there have been several changes. She said the first time she walked in to the facility, she could see the lines going around through a big window. The departments have changed; the KFC department is now the Dapec department. There was leg deboning, marinated parts and a freezer in the past. Many of the jobs that were performed manually are now automated.
Sherry and I talked about the supervisors and managers she has worked for during her years with the company. She said she has liked all of her supervisors and she remembers a few from the past, Ed Smith, Robbie House, Liz Weese and Barb Stickley.
When I asked Sherry about the most memorable event she remembers since she started working, she said she remembers the plant expansion in the 1990’s. They were able to take a tour at the open house and the whole layout in the plant and the office area was very different from before.
When Sherry isn’t working, she likes to spend her time with her family. She has a son and sister who go on walks with her enjoying the outdoors. She also likes to help her parents with their gardening and canning every year.
What does the future hold for Sherry? She wants to keep working until she can retire from Pilgrim’s. When she retires, she just wants to take it easy and enjoy herself!
