Charleston, West Virginia – Commercial red meat production in West Virginia during November 2025 totaled 900,000 pounds. This was down 25 percent from November 2024. Commercial red meat production is the carcass weight after slaughter including beef, veal, pork, lamb and mutton. Individual commodity production is total live weight of commercial slaughter.
Commercial cattle slaughter totaled 1,150,000 pounds live weight, down 31 percent from November 2024. Cattle slaughter totaled 1,000 head, down 400 head from the previous year. The average live weight was down 11 pounds from the previous year, at 1,142 pounds. Commercial hog slaughter totaled 155,000 pounds live weight, down 22 percent from last year. Hog slaughter totaled 600 head, unchanged from the previous year. The average live weight was down 34 pounds from the previous year, at 275 pounds.
All hay area harvested in 2025 totaled 615,000 acres, up 8,000 acres from 2024. The average yield in 2025 was 1.71 tons per acre, up 0.19 ton per acre from 2024. Production totaled 1,053,000 tons, up 133,000 tons from 2024. December On Farm Hay Stocks were 780,000 tons, up 100,000 tons from 2024.
Alfalfa hay area harvested totaled 15,000 acres in 2025, up 8,000 acres from 2024. Yields in 2025 averaged 2.20 tons per acre, down 0.60 ton per acre from 2024. Production totaled 33,000 tons, up 13,000 tons from 2024. New seedings of alfalfa in 2025 are estimated at 2,000 acres, up 1,000 acres from 2024.
All other hay area harvested totaled 600,000 acres in 2025, unchanged from 2024. Yields averaged 1.70 tons per acre, up 0.20 ton per acre from 2024. Production totaled 1,020,000 tons, up 120,000 tons from 2024.
Corn area planted for all purposes in 2025 totaled 41,000 acres, unchanged from 2024. Harvested area for grain totaled 30,000 acres, up 6,000 acres from 2024. The average yield of 153.0 bushels per acre was up 43 bushels per acre from 2024. Production was 4,590,000 bushels, up 1,950,000 bushels from 2024.
Corn for silage area harvested was 9,000 acres in 2025, unchanged from 2024. Yields averaged 19.0 tons per acre, up 7.0 tons per acre from 2024. Silage production was estimated at 171,000 tons, up 63,000 tons from 2024.
Maple syrup number of taps in 2025 was 68,000, down 2,000 taps from 2024. Yield per tap was 0.215 gallon, up 0.044 gallon per tap from 2024. Production totaled 15,000 gallons in 2025, up 3,000 gallons from 2024. Acreage totaled 2,200 acres, unchanged from 2024.
The total area planted to principal crops in West Virginia totaled 656,000 acres in 2025, up 8,000 acres from 2024. Area harvested totaled 654,000 acres, up 14,000 acres from 2024. Principal crops include acres planted to corn and acres harvested for all hay.
