It was a season full of thorns as the Yellow Jackets swarmed into Berkeley Springs and came out smelling like roses with a 63-6 season ending victory in the 61st meeting dating back to 1932.
Moorefield is the oldest opponent for the Indians in program history.
The Yellow Jackets (2-8) extended the Berkeley Springs (2-8) losing streak this season to seven games and commandeered a 41-17-3 overall series record against the Indians.
“It was great sending these seniors off with a win,” Moorefield Football coach Eric Linville exclaimed.
“They’ve worked hard, it was well-deserved. It also gives the underclassmen a positive note to build on.”
The final game was a high note for the Yellow Jackets seniors departing with a win after a tumultuous season: Kevin Aleman, Daltan Ault, Luke Combs, Oliver Crites, Marcel Jaeger, Brock Linville, Shawn Reed, Lawrence Sherman, Brady Vetter, Jeb Wagner and Gage Wolfe.
Moorefield senior Shawn Reed started the fireworks returning the opening kickoff to the house and junior Levi Davis added the extra point for the initial 7-nil lead over the Indians.
Reed was one of three Yellow Jackets to score two touchdowns apiece as fellow senior Brock Linville hit pay dirt twice and freshman Mathew Iman found the end zone two times.
“We worked really hard on special teams this week and it paid off. Nice to set the tone early. Offense was clicking on all cylinders and the defense played fast and stingy. We caused two turnovers. Flinn with a strip fumble and Iman with an interception,” Linville stated.
The Yellow Jackets kept buzzing for a 42-6 halftime lead en route to the win.
Moorefield seniors Oliver Crites and Daltan Ault recorded one touchdown each as well as junior Caleb Flinn.
Davis was perfect on the night hitting all nine extra point kicks for the Yellow Jackets.
Crites turned on the beast mode overpowering the Indians.
The Moorefield defense got in the spotlight as Caleb Flinn executed a strip fumble and Mathew Iman created an interception.
It was pouring down rain as the Yellow Jackets celebrated with a bittersweet feeling of joy and sorrow as comforting hugs were shared with the seniors.
The tears were washed away with the Eau de Berkeley Springs as Moorefield smelled like victory for one final bow by the seniors.
