Family Crisis Center Observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 7, 2025

The Family Crisis Center is joining communities across the nation in recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month is a time to honor survivors, remember those who have lost their lives to domestic violence, and strengthen community efforts to end abuse.

Domestic violence affects people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, and financial abuse. Its impact is far reaching, affecting not only survivors but also children, families, and entire communities.

“Domestic Violence Awareness Month is about more than recognizing the problem,” said Sonya Fazzalore, Executive Director. “It is about taking action, supporting survivors, and building a future where everyone feels safe in their own home.”

Throughout October, the Family Crisis Center will host awareness activities, provide educational materials, and encourage community members to take part in conversations about prevention and support. The center also reminds residents that services are available year round, including emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy, and a 24 hour hotline.  The Center’s Annual Day of Remembrance will be held on October 17, 2025, at 11:00 in the Grace United Methodist Church in Keyser, WV.  This event is open to the public.

The Family Crisis Center invites everyone to wear purple during October to show support for survivors and to take a stand against violence. Community members can also participate by attending local events, learning how to recognize signs of abuse, and sharing resources with friends and family.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. Call the Family Crisis Center’s confidential hotline at [insert local hotline at 304-788-6061 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1 800 799 SAFE.  The Family Crisis Center serves Mineral, Hampshire, Hardy, Grant and Pendleton counties.

Together, the community can raise awareness, support healing, and work toward a future free from violence.
