The Moorefield Town Council welcomed their newest member, Erica Davy, during their regular meeting Aug. 5. City Clerk Rick Freeman issued the oath of office, and Davy officially joined the Council to finish the two years in Mary Jo Tobin’s term.

Mike Crites and Greg George, representing the Historic Landmark Commission, need the Mayor’s signature to renew their contract with the Mills Group, who has worked with the commission for several years and whose help the commission needs to get the Tannery on the National Register of Historic Places.

Because they weren’t on the schedule, the issue was tabled until the next meeting.

Amy Greenwalt reported on Building and Improvement permits, and code enforcement.

In July, 13 permits were approved, bringing the year total to 61. July’s $341,255 worth of improvements brought the year to $1.7 million.

Twenty-one property owners had 24 code violations in July. Most violations were grass and weeds.

Moorefield Police Chief Stephen Riggleman reported his officers responded to 182 calls for service in July. They conducted traffic control for three parades, including the Fourth of July and Poultry parades.

Riggleman said they disposed of more than 62 pounds of prescription medication and other illegal contraband.

Four applicants took a physical fitness test; three passed. Four current officers became certified on their new Tasers, and two attended a Taser Instructors Course, enabling the department to conduct its own qualifications.

One new officer completed his required recertification and is now working; a second officer is scheduled to complete the W.Va. State Police Academy on Aug. 22.

Public Works Director Lucas Gagnon said mowing the levee has been focus for Town crews.

While demolishing a block building on Spring Ave., some blocks struck a neighbor’s heat pump. The Town covered the cost of replacement.

The next meeting is Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Council’s city hall chambers. The public is invited to attend.
