Moorefield Boys Soccer defeated Berkeley Springs 2-1 at Inskeep Field to remain undefeated in program history against the Indians.
The Yellow Jackets kept composure through the aggressive play and ignored the megaphone usage by the Indians fans to secure the win on Wednesday.
Moorefield Boys Soccer opened the scoring with a crisp cross pass on the pitch from the top left corner from Javi Acosta to Chernet Ansani, who fired the ball through traffic into the goal just six minutes into the match.
Berkeley Springs responded about seven minutes later to tie it up.
“It was really exciting. I told him to cross it and I think he saw me, too. It was perfectly placed and I thought I missed it, but it was spot on. As a captain, it was a great energy starter for our team. It got everybody riled up for the match and kept us going. It is absolutely great to have the fan support to boost our morale and keep our energy going. The keys were mostly on defense keeping them tight and not allowing passes to get through. They have their key passes and we just intercepted them. We just had to see doing what we were doing in the second half. Javi’s goal helped our morale and weakest going,” Moorefield Boys Soccer senior Chernet Ansani noted.
In the closing minute of the first half, Ansani swiped the ball away from Berkeley Springs and launched a deep pass into Indians territory.
Acosta chased the pass down by beating out two defenders for a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper.
Acosta juked the goalkeeper, who made a slide. Acosta got around him to create a side-angle kick before crashing into the post. An Indians defender trailing on the sequence tried to slide to redirect the kick, and the ball landed in the goal as the Yellow Jackets went up 2-1 just 14 seconds before halftime.
“This win means everything. We are in the season trying to get a good seed for regionals., so hopefully we can make it to state. We try to keep a good home stadium. We are trying to win all our games, but it is more important to me is to win at home. It motivates me. It is always good to see that the community supports you and the backbone of our team. I had to keep my composure to net it in. I knew once I got past the keeper it would go in, but the defender helped kick it in for me,” Moorefield Boys Soccer senior Javi Acosta commented.
It was a defensive battle in the second half with Moorefield claiming the 2-1 win with Teagan Eversole making a few key saves when challenged.
Berkeley Springs fans encouraged more pushing during the match, but the Yellow Jackets ignored the extra noise and adversity on the field to gain a fourth win in two seasons over the Indians which included a playoff ousting last year.
Moorefield has outscored the Indians 15-5 in all four victories combined.
“Scoring the first goal helps to boost the morale of the team. It kind of makes the other team think twice. Javi’s goal brought our energy level up. When they had scored on us, it was kind of like now what. When e played them last year, they were physical and we prepared for it. It is always good to win at home and we appreciate the support,” Moorefield Boys Soccer coach Larry Foster stated.
Berkeley Springs Girls Soccer shutout the Yellow Jackets 7-nil to split the evening battle at Inskeep.
