James Breathed Shobe

James Breathed Shobe, “Jim”, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life marked by devotion to family, service to his country, and a deep love of the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Debbie; his parents, Charles and Annie Shobe; and his siblings, Charlie Bill and Susan.

Jim is survived by his sons, Eric Shobe and his wife, Stephanie, and James B. Shobe Jr. and his husband, Donald Chi. He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren: Andrew, Matthew, Arles, and Artic, who brought him great joy.

A 1959 graduate of Moorefield High School, Jim later earned his degree from West Virginia Tech. He was especially proud of his time in military service, which he spoke of with honor and quiet pride throughout his life. He loved telling stories from those years, particularly about his time in Germany, stories that family members heard many times and always welcomed hearing again.

Jim loved nature and the outdoors and found peace in the natural world. He enjoyed photographing the beauty around him and was an avid kayaker long before kayaking became popular—always happiest on the water, moving at his own steady pace. He also had a lifelong love for his dogs, who were constant companions and a source of comfort and joy throughout his life.

Family and friends will also remember Jim for the stories he shared about his siblings, speaking of them with affection, humor, and enduring pride.

He will be remembered for his independence, the desire to choose his own path, his appreciation of the simple things, and his enduring love for his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, the Alzheimer’s Association or your local animal shelter. The family will be holding a private celebration of life service.
