Agnes Marie (Aggie) Campbell Mason, beloved wife of Gary F. Mason of Gore, Va., died peacefully in her sleep at Blue Ridge Hospice Center in Winchester, Va., on October 13, 2026. Her family was blessed to be by her side.
Aggie was born in Wilmington, Del., on November 15, 1934, to Ella Frances McDowell and Arthur Pue Gorman Campbell. She grew up in rural Cecil County, Md., spending much of her girlhood at her maternal grandmother’s home. To find privacy from her seven younger siblings, she often perched in an apple tree reading books. After graduating from Rising Sun High School in 1952, she joined the FBI and moved to Washington, D.C., at age 17.
On her 21st birthday in 1955, Aggie met Gary Mason on a triple blind date—though he was not actually her date. They quickly fell in love and married in March 1956. Six months later, Gary was drafted into the US Army. Aggie followed him to Augusta, Ga., and Frankfurt, Germany, where she worked for the CIA. They treasured traveling throughout Europe whenever Gary had leave.
After returning to the United States, they settled in Northern Virginia, raised their two daughters, and lived there for 48 years before retiring to a small farm near Gore, where they remained with help from their grandson Michael. Devoted soulmates, Aggie and Gary shared more than 70 happy years of marriage.
Aggie was the heartbeat of her family—unflappable, empathetic, wise, and warm, with a wonderful sense of humor. A voracious reader and gifted storyteller, she volunteered with Lions Club and Neighbor-to-Neighbor and read to schoolchildren at the Wardensville Community Library. She loved people-watching, singing, and ice cream.
In addition to her husband, Gary, Aggie is survived by daughters Linda Mason (Michael Ettlinger) and Jennifer Thoen (Robert Thoen); grandchildren Aiden and Emily Ettlinger, Michael, Catherine, Thomas, Jonathan, and Mary Thoen, and Mary’s fiancé, Seth Gillespie; and sisters Sylvia Grove and Kay Snelling.
The family will receive friends Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 1–2:30 p.m. at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home & Crematory in Wardensville, W.Va.. A funeral service will follow at 2:30 PM, officiated by Pastor Michael Funkhouser.
