Moorefield Tennis hits the refresh button this season with a revamped roster and christening brand new courts at the Moorefield Town Park.
Nearly the entire roster from the Potomac Valley Conference Boys Tennis 3-time Championship and state tournament legacy and two PVC Girls singles champions have graduated.
Despite a nearly novice roster in the seedings with the exception of MHS Boys Tennis junior Stewart Malone, the Yellow Jackets will be buzzing with a fresh set of contenders swarming the courts.
The Yellow Jackets Tennis coaches are: Quincy Combs (Boys) and Traci Alley (Girls).
“The goals for the season is to improve overall as a team. We only have one person returning on varsity from the past season as the others have graduated. This season will be a huge rebuilding year, but that is not to say we won’t be successful or go far this year. Our team chemistry is strong and even wants to succeed. The boys have big goals this year to win PVC and make it to the state tournament. With a strong work ethic and determination this is possible, as I have seen it before,” Moorefield Boys Tennis coach Quincy Combs remarked.
Moorefield Town Park director Juwana Bridger and the construction crew worked tirelessly to make sure the courts would be paved and ready for the season.
The rush to complete the courts in time created a couple of logistical issues, but the Yellow Jackets found ways to ensure home matches.
The Moorefield Boys Tennis team roster is comprised of one senior – Marcel Jaeger; five juniors – Jedidiah Blizzard (sandwich aficionado), Josiah Whetzel, Preston Cosner, Stewart Monroe and William Kuh; sophomore trio – Weston Eye, Anthony Torres-Cruz and Caleb Snell; plus freshmen quartet – Brycen Alley, David Stonestreet, Geoffrey Williams and Levi Williams.
The Moorefield Boys seeding to start the season will be: Singles — No. 1 Stewart Monroe, No. 2 Preston Cosner, No. 3 Brycen Alley, No. 4 Weston Eye; Doubles — No. 1 Monroe and Cosner, No. 2 Alley and Eye, No. 3 Marcel Jaeger and Levi Williams.
Moorefield Girls Tennis doesn’t have a senior, but full of talented leaders through the underclass and this group knows how to have fun.
The Yellow Jackets Girls Tennis squad includes a junior quartet – Sakura Cameron, Emily Evans, Morgan Malone and Grace Tayman; solo sophomore – Kailey Miller and freshmen septet – Kensington Bedal, Allison Jackson, Natalie Rubenkonig, Alayna Foley, Patience Crislip, Jaylin Anderson and Taylor Mulligan.
The girls seeding could be shifting during practice, so the exact positions will be listed at a later date.
Moorefield Girls Tennis won the season opener with a 7-nil shutout over Lewis County in Weston and kept the momentum going with a win over Trinity Christian on the new courts.
Moorefield Boys Tennis took the season opening loss against the Minutemen 4-3, then bounced back with a 5-2 victory over the Warriors.
Moorefield Tennis hosted Petersburg on Tuesday and will embark on a three match road trip starting at Washington along with Jefferson on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets lone out of state competition will be Allegany in Cumberland, MD.
The Potomac Valley Conference Championship will be held in Sunrise Summit on May 5.
