Hardy County Girls Wrestling excelled at the Tyler “Siggy” Sigler Girls Elite Opener at Washington High School in Charles Town led by Moorefield’s Annie Barr winning a
championship and East Hardy trio finishing as runners-up. This opener is in memory of Tyler “Coach Siggy” Sigler, a 2014 graduate of Washington High School who continued his wrestling career at Liberty University before returning to be the
Patriots Wrestling assistant coach prior to a weather related fatality earlier this year.
Moorefield Girls Wrestling took third place overall as a team in this opener with Annie
Barr winning the pipe wrench style trophy in the 126-lb division.
Each champion received the pipe wrench trophy in honor and memory of Coach Siggy. ‘It felt amazing to get the win, and it was definitely a confidence booster for this season. The biggest keys were just applying what I’ve been working on at practice and going out on the mat with confidence. The trophy design was actually a pipe wrench, which made it
even cooler,” Moorefield Girls Wrestling champion Annie Barr noted. The Yellow Jackets podium success continued with with a quartet of fourth place finishes by LeAnne Coon (107), Jalee Lender (165), Kailynn Penkov (185) and Kourtneyy Smith
(235).
East Hardy Girls Wrestling was guided by three silver medalists: Gracie Heishman (132),
Morganne Miller (145) and Jayden Funk (126).
The Cougars took home two more bronze medals achieved by Chloe D’Amico (138) and
Madilyn Funk (120).
Moorefield Boys competed in the Hedgesville Duals over the same weekend with Javier Acosta going undefeated at 10-0 in the 132-lb class leading the Yellow Jackets, followed by
Daltan Ault with a record of 9-1 in the 190 class.
“The keys to going undefeated this first tournament were just hard work and the great coaches
I’ve been blessed to be taught by,” Moorefield Boys Wrestling’s Javi Acosta said. The double leg takedown is Acosta’s favorite move and was executed flawlessly to get the
momentum going.
East Hardy Boys Wrestling competed in the Central Woodstock Tournament in Virginia.
