Herby Brown, 88, of Wardensville, WV, died on Monday, October 27, 2025, at his home.
Herby was born on August 5, 1937, in Mulberry, TN, the son of the late John and Katie Deal Brown. Herby was a 21-year veteran in the United States Army serving as a Chief Warrant Officer helicopter pilot serving two tours in Vietnam (Sept. 1965-Sept. 1966 & June 1969 – June 1970). Following his military career, Herby worked for 17 years at O’Sullivan Corp. as a Maintenance Supervisor, and was a member of Wardensville UMC, Strasburg Moose Lodge, a former member of Wardensville Vol. Rescue Squad and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #2102 in Wardensville, WV, where he was a Past Commander & Quarter Master.
He enjoyed country western dancing, where he was a line dancing instructor, square dancing, clogging, and was an opening act for many country music stars. Herby was the first pool manager at the Wardensville Town Park pool where he was also a swim instructor, coached little league football in Wardensville and enjoyed watching the Miami Dolphins. Herby was a proud farmer and enjoyed spending time tending to his cattle and spending time on the farm with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Herby married Eunice V. Strosnider on February 14, 1959, in Jefferson, IN.
Surviving with his wife of 66 years is a son: James A. Brown (Laura) of Gainesboro, VA; a daughter: Katie Jo Brown (Jerry) of Capon Bridge, WV; three grandchildren: James A. Brown, Jr.; Kaitlin Wolford (Derek); Faith Feldhauser; and three great-grandchildren: Deacon, Joanna, & Darrin Wolford.
He is preceded in death by two brothers: Grady & Gordon Brown; and two sisters: Mary Fritzel & Margaret Longwell.
A funeral service was held at Faith Mission Church in Wardensville, WV on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 3:00 PM. Officiating will be Pastor Michael Funkhouser. Interment will follow in the Greenfield Cemetery in Wardensville, WV. Military rites will be accorded by the United States Army.
