Bridgewater College professor and Mathias resident Nicole A. Yurcaba placed third in Virginia’s Skyline poetry contest for her poem “Kenova.” The poem is the emotional depiction and experiential translation of a botched military exercise. The poem will be published in the 2017 Skyline anthology.
Yurcaba also received publication in Construction, an online political magazine, for her poem “The Pale Goth Listens to Ukrainian Death Metal.”
The poem, inspired by a variety of Ukrainian folk-metal bands who incorporate Ukrainian folklore and poetry into their lyrics, blends historical [private]witness and current events, and implicitly comments on the current war in Ukraine and the global response to the 2013 Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the poem, Yurcaba explores Ukrainian identity, Ukrainian-American identity, as well as the role of gothic subculture as an amalgamation of individualism, subculture aesthetic, and cultural preservation.
Yurcaba has poems forthcoming in The Broadkill Review, a Delaware poetry journal, and Collateral, University of Washington’s journal dedicated to military literature.
