In the West Virginia American Legion Baseball Area 4 Tournament played in Romney, Moorefield Post 64 defeated Kingwood 10-0 and 10-6, but fell to Romney Post 91 20-10 and 8-2.
Moorefield opened the tournament with a 10-6 victory over Kingwood, building an 8-0 lead through five innings and staved off a rally for the win.
In the first inning, Moorefield’s Blake Watts singled and scored on RBI single from Austin Whetzel.
Westly Martinez smacked an RBI double sending Whetzel home for the 2-0 lead.
Isaac Van Meter crushed a triple in the fourth inning and Brent Moran notched an RBI single.
[private] After the bases were loaded on hit batters, Whetzel garnered a two-run producing single into left field.
During the fifth inning, Moorefield’s Hayden Baldwin reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Van Meter.
Watts plated two runs on an error in right field to put Moorefield up 8-0.
Watts and Van Meter added RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings to secure the win as Kingwood pulled it to within three runs at 9-6 with Moorefield taking the game 10-6.
Romney doubled up on Moorefield in the second round of the area tournament 20-10.
Moorefield held a 3-2 lead after the first inning, but Romney scored five runs in the third inning and a pair in the fourth inning to take a 9-3 advantage.
Moorefield scored another run in the fifth inning, two in the sixth inning and four in the seventh, but Romney made damage with 11 runs in the sixth inning for separation.
In the first inning, Moorefield’s Jestin Cosner and Jake Ours singled with Whetzel hitting an RBI single to right field.
Baldwin came through with a two-RBI single to center field to take a 3-nil lead.
Romney answered with a pair of runs and later took the lead in the third inning.
Van Meter hit an RBI single in the fifth inning, then Ours and Whetzel plated runs in the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning, Moorefield’s Jacob Mauzy hit an RBI groundout sending Van Meter home. then Cosner connected for an RBI single to plate Moran, Ours sent Cosner across the plate with an RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Lane Ours plated Watts before Romney pitcher Zach Whitacre ended the game on a strikeout.
Moorefield pitchers Hayden Baldwin (6) and Blake Watts (3) combined for nine strikeouts and allowed only three hits in a 10-0 shutout over Kingwood.
Moorefield’s Van Meter hit an RBI single into left field to plate Watts (single) in the third inning for the initial 1-0 lead over Kingwood.
In the fourth inning, Moran singled and Cosner walked before Watts hit a grounder up the middle for an RBI single and Ours connected to left field for a two-run producing RBI single.
Martinez singled in the seventh inning and a pair of walks to Van Meter and Baldwin loaded the bases for Moran hitting an RBI sacrifice fly to right field and Cosner hit an RBI single to left field.
In the eighth inning, Martinez singled again and Van Meter reached on an error before Baldwin hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field.
An error in right field allowed Van Meter to score and Moran reached second base before a walk was given to Fisher Wheeler.
Moran scored on an error by the catcher and Wheeler came home on an RBI single by Cosner for the 10-nil victory.
In the Area 4 final game against Romney, Moorefield scored in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Westly Martinez plating Jake Ours and again in the third inning for a 2-1 edge as Hayden Baldwin hit an RBI single to score Brent Moran before Romney answered with five runs in the bottom half en route to an 8-2 victory.
Romney advanced to the state tournament, picking up one win against South Charleston before being eliminated by Bridgeport. Wheeling won its third consecutive state championship.
