Coming off a five-set loss, East Hardy channeled motivation to sweep Broadway this season in a four set victory last Thursday in Baker: 25-12, 18-25, 27-25 and 26-24.
“We played better tonight. We still have work to do. We aren’t quite there yet,” East Hardy coach Marsha Hahn noted.
East Hardy’s Brooke Miller delivered an ace to even the initial set.
An attack by East Hardy’s Emma Baker drew a point as Broadway defender inadvertently touched the net.
[private] Abby Wilson launched the ball over the net and Broadway made contact with the net again.
A serve by Hahn was met with a carry by the Lady Gobblers.
Wilson went to make a block, but the follow through by Hadleigh Lewis created a net violation.
Hahn sandwiched two aces around a volley out of bounds for an 11-4 advantage.
East Hardy’s Lexi Strawderman made a dig and Miller scooped the ball to Baker with the Broadway return sailing out.
Strawderman blocked a volley and the Lady Gobblers couldn’t control the ball as it slipped out.
Miller made a tip over the net for a point with Broadway touching the net once more.
Kylie Morris answered with an attack for a point, then the ensuing serve was met with a dig by Hahn with a pass from Strawderman to Miller, who had the volley blocked out.
Wilson made a couple of kills for a 22-9 advantage.
Hannah Beck picked up a point on a spike, then a couple of errors chipped at the deficit.
A dig by Miller and a pass from Strawderman setup Wilson for a kill, then Hahn ended the set with an ace 25-12.
Broadway held an 8-4 advantage in the second set behind some spikes from Morris and Troyer plus errant volleys.
Miller stepped up for a couple blocks and a kill, plus Baker made a nice play at the net with Broadway stumbling for a carry, 10-7.
Mistakes through the set kept East Hardy from making the necessary rally, but the Lady Cougars had some highlights on the back row with digs by Strawderman, Cara Hinkle, and Miller.
Hahn added an ace late in the set, but Broadway sealed the set with a kill by Troyer, 25-18.
Broadway started the third set with a 7-0 lead, but the Lady Cougars clawed back.
Troyer made a couple of points, despite digs by Strawderman and Baker.
East Hardy hit the net a couple of times and Morris served an ace,
A carrying violation on the Lady Gobblers put Miller on the line serving and the return landed in the net.
After a kill by Wilson, Miller delivered two aces to close the gap 7-5.
A block by Wilson went out of bounds, then Strawderman made a dig on a serve and Wilson took the assist from Hahn on a spike.
Kenna Wicks served and Wilson added another kill.
After dig went awry for East Hardy, Wilson punched an attack through a double block and Baker made a dig during Hahn’s serving with the pass going to Wilson for a spike to tie the set at 9-all.
Broadway took a 17-11 lead on kills by Beck and Morris.
The Lady Cougars answered with attacks from Wilson and Hahn, then Miller served and the ball was deflected out for a 19-15 score.
Broadway made a couple of volleys into the net, then Wilson’s attack drew Broadway too close to the net.
The Lady Gobblers took a 23-18 lead on an error, but couldn’t shake East Hardy.
As defending state champions, East Hardy knows how to make a rally.
An attack by Jessica Smith off a dig from Hahn was returned into the net and Miller smashed the ball, 23-all.
Diaz created an attack point, then Smith’s volley wasn’t corralled.
Miller launched an attacking it was deflected out as East Hardy took a 25-24 lead.
Broadway tied the set again on a push point by Diaz, then Asha Beck blocked a volley out of bounds.
Wilson made a dig, then moments later finished the set with a spike 27-25.
East Hardy grabbed a 9-0 advantage in the fourth set which included six Lady Gobblers errors, plus a kill by Wilson and an ace from Miller.
Broadway hit the net returning a shot by Wilson, then started to fight back with points but Hannah Beck, Asha Beck and Lewis to close the gap to 11-6.
Miller made a couple of kills, but mistakes erased those points.
Lewis delivered a pair of aces to make it 15-13.
After a kill by Troyer, East Hardy had volleys hit the net and go out.
Wilson made a point off a tipped ball, then a serve by Wicks was returned into the net for a 20-17 score.
Wilson blocked a couple shots by Troyer to make it 23-18.
Baker assisted Miller on an attack, then Morris landed a volley on the line for a point, 24-23.
An attack by Lewis was filled with a dig by Strawderman only to eventually land in the net.
Miller got a point on an attack with a violation by the Lady Gobblers.
Smith made an attack and #3 returned the ball, then Baker passed to Miller for an attack.
Miller’s last volley was sent back out of bounds to close the match, 26-24.
East Hardy JV squad picked up a 2-1 win: 25-16, 13-25 and 25-22.
The Lady Cougars have shown they can pounce when necessary.
