The Lady Cougars pounced into the season opener with an 11-strikeout one-hit performance from Brooke Miller and continued attacking from the plate for an 11-0 victory over Southern Garrett last Tuesday.
“The girls came out ready to play and I couldn’t be more proud of them. They hit the ball and Brooke Miller was outstanding on the mound. She had 11 strikeouts and only one hit. The girls helped her out scoring runs and they just did awesome.”
Miller started the game by fanning the first three Lady Rams to come to the plate.
East Hardy leadoff batter Skye Metzer smacked a single into left field and stole second base.[private] After a flyout, Julia Hahn ripped an RBI triple into centerfield for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The hitting continued as Miller notched an RBI double with the help of an error in centerfield, then Emma Baker singled and beat the wide throw at first base as another run scored.
Leanna Basye stepped to the plate and hit a grounder into right field for an RBI single as the Lady Cougars secured a 4-0 advantage before a flyout and groundout retired the side.
Miller pitched another strikeout, then Southern Garrett’s Kiara DiSimone reached base on an error during a bunt creating a chance to arrive at second base, but Miller responded with two more strikeouts to squash a potential run.
The Lady Cougars went down in order on a line drive, flyout, and groundout.
In the top of the third inning, Miller threw two strikeouts before allowing a walk and the only hit of the game by the Lady Rams from Haleigh Wildesen, then a groundout ended the side.
Hahn hit a leadoff double in left center, then Miller plated her on an RBI double to left field as the ball slipped under the fielder on a routine scoop attempt.
Baker garnered an RBI single to left center to give East Hardy a 6-0 lead.
After a groundout and single by Jessica Smith, Cara Hinkle hit into a double play.
Southern Garrett went down in order on strikeouts in the fourth inning.
East Hardy’s Madi Strawderman singled to begin the attack and was sent home on an RBI triple by Metzer.
The Lady Rams shortstop dropped a pop-up by Lexi Strawderman to put two on the bases.
Hahn’s knock down the first base line eluded Amy Schmidt and Metzer scored.
Miller placed the ball into left field for an RBI single and the game ended on a two run producing double by Baker for the 11-0 victory.
The Lady Cougars travel to Frankfort tomorrow and host Moorefield on Friday, then visit Spring Mills on Saturday for a doubleheader. [/private]
