As we have already written, the Moorefield High School Alumni Association is gearing up for the May 6 event to celebrate 100 years of history of Moorefield High School.
In 2013, when there was a reunion planned by the fledgling alumni group, an Athletic Hall of Fame was established to honor former athletes, coaches or supporters. Last year additional athletes were honored during a second presentation complete with a large wall plaque installed at the high school with the names of all those honored.
This year there will be another group inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, but in addition, there has been a second Hall of Fame established by the Alumni group. This one will honor former graduates who have attained Distinguished Achievement in their communities, in community service or in education.
Nominations will be accepted for this new Distinguished Achievement Hall of Fame until April 10. Forms are available at the high school or at the Moorefield Examiner. Criteria is included on the nomination form.
There have been a myriad of MHS alumni who can and should be included into this new Hall of Fame, clear back to 1917 when Charles Gilkeson received the first Moorefield High School diploma. We have doctors, lawyers, CEOs, generals, politicians and government employees who have had outstanding careers. But there are also volunteers, teachers, veterans (including those who gave their lives for this country), business men and women who provided jobs and services, all who attended Moorefield High School or were involved with the school and who may just deserve being recognized for their contributions to Moorefield, Hardy County, West Virginia and the country.
By the way, not everyone who is nominated can be put into the Halls of Fame. There may be others who are more qualified or too many to include all in any one year. Any nomination received for either Hall of Fame will be retained for a period of time to be considered another time if the individual is not inducted in the year the nomination is received.
We hope you have marked May 6 on your calendar and that you will join the Alumni Association in celebrating a century of Moorefield High School.
More information will be forthcoming and some is on the MHS Alumni Association Facebook page.
