Following a wonderful visit with family and friends at the annual reunion, family heartbreak arrived in the early moring hours of Wednesday, June 7, 2017.
The home of Pop and Mom Thomas (John William and Elizabeth Evans Thomas) burned to the ground, along with several pieces of furniture built by Granddaddy (great and great-great) Pop Thomas. Granddaddy Pop Thomas built the family home piece-meal as materials became available in the late 1930s/early 1940s. When telephone service finally arrived the family party telephone number was 5J. This party line was the precursor of today’s social media communications in that you could pick up the phone at almost any time and join an on-going conversation with your neighbors. Everybody knew everybody, everybody shared, and everybody supported all the folks of the entire community.
